Mandatory health insurance for entry into Kenya from 6 October 2026

From October 6, 2026, tourists planning a trip to Kenya will be required to have Inbound Travel Health Insurance, which must cover the entire period of their stay in the country.

The new rules apply to travellers arriving in Kenya, including passengers on charter and scheduled flights to Mombasa and Nairobi.

IMPORTANT!  Having previously purchased international travel or medical insurance does not guarantee compliance with Kenya's new requirements.
Travel insurance must meet Kenyan government requirements.

Cost of compulsory travel insurance for entry into Kenya

The cost of health insurance is approximately  USD 44 per person (about USD 50-52 including fees)  .

There are special conditions for children:

• Children from 3 to 17 years old  - 50% discount on the standard insurance cost.
• Children under 2 years of age inclusive  are exempt from paying for insurance.

Insurance must cover the entire period of stay in Kenya. The insurance product offered through the eTA system is valid for stays of up to 92 days.

Where and how can I get compulsory insurance in Kenya?

You can purchase insurance online through the official Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) portal:   https://www.etakenya.go.ke/en
Insurance can be purchased directly when you apply for an eTA.
If a passenger has already received an approved eTA, they can purchase mandatory insurance separately through the same portal. To do so, please provide the reference number of your previously submitted eTA application.

Is regular travel insurance sufficient for travel to Kenya?

According to information provided by tour operators, insurance policies issued outside of Kenya may be accepted if they meet established coverage requirements.
However, the process for verifying and accepting such policies through the eTA system has not yet been finalized.

To avoid potential problems during document verification and flight check-in, we recommend following the insurance instructions posted on the official Kenya eTA portal.

What are the health insurance requirements for Kenya?

The minimum total amount of insurance coverage must be  at least USD 50,000  .

• Medical treatment costs – not less than USD 20,000.
• Emergency medical transportation - not less than USD 25,000.
• Repatriation of remains – not less than USD 5,000.
• Reimbursement for the cost of prescription drugs and certain types of medical care related to mental health.

What documents are required to enter Kenya in 2026?

As a reminder, effective January 4, 2024, entry into Kenya requires an Electronic Travel Authorization  (eTA)  .
You can apply for an eTA on the official website:   https://www.etakenya.go.ke/en
The approximate cost of an eTA is $35 per person. Application processing can take up to three business days, so we recommend submitting your application in advance.

To enter Kenya you must also have:

• A passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival in the country.
• Approved electronic travel authorization (eTA).
• Proof of sufficient funds for the period of stay (at least USD 500).
• A return ticket or an onward ticket. Failure to provide these documents may result in entry being denied.

Please note! Documents will be checked upon check-in.  Failure to provide the required eTA authorization, proof of mandatory health insurance, or other documents may result in denial of check-in, boarding, or entry into Kenya.
